Man, 26, to spend 10 years behind bars for rape

In Niger State, a 26 year old man, Salisu Umar has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by the Chief Magistrate Court II, Tunga, Minna for raping a four- year-old minor.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), on January 8, 2014, at about 10:30am, one Ayuba Tanimu of Abdulsalam Quaters reported at the Maitumbi Police station that Umar of Peter Sarki road, Minna went to their area and took his daughter (names withheld) aged four to an uncompleted building where he forcefully had sexual intercourse with her without her consent and as a result inflicting bodily injuries in her private part.
The offence, according to the FIR read by the prosecutor, Inspector Ahmed Sa’idu is contrary to section 18 of the Child’s Right Law of Niger State, which allowed the Magistrate to try the case.
When the charge was read to him, Omar pleaded guilty with remorse.
After listening to the charge and confessions by the accused, the Chief Magistrate, Abdullahi Usman sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment without an option of fine and to pay compensation of N50, 000.
In another development, a Bauchi Court has arraigned five people for engaging in gay activities in Bauchi State. Gay activities contravene the Islamic laws which the state is operating.
Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) who confirmed the incident said “Police are aware of the case but the suspects were arrested by the Shariah Commission and they were taken to court you can reach the commission for further information.”
Effort to get the Chairman of the Commission Mustafa Baba Ilelah failed but he recently told reporters in Bauchi that the suspects were arrested and will be charged to court after investigation.
A senior Hisbah official who doesn’t want his name in print said the suspects were arraigned before Upper Shariah court number four and they were remanded in Prison custody, saying four of the suspects pleaded guilty while one denied the charges.
