Why Mimiko won’t defect to PDP —Labour Party

The Labour Party has said there is no basis for the Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, to defect from the party to the Peoples Democratic Party.
National Chairman of the party, Dr. Dan Nwanyanwu, said in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, that it would be wrong for Mimiko to defect from the LP.
He said there had been unrelenting rumour about the alleged plan by the governor to defect to the PDP since he assumed office in 2009.
Nwanyanwu was reacting to the claim by the Chairman of PDP in Osun State, Mr. Gani Olaoluwa, who had told Sunday PUNCH that Mimiko would soon join the ruling party.
Olaoluwa had said, “Arrangements have been concluded with Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State to defect from the LP to the PDP.
“The PDP is gaining and we are attracting heavyweight politicians to the party. (Ex- Kano State Governor, Ibrahim) Shekarau has come to the PDP, and you can see that we are winning and that is just the beginning.”
But Nwanyanwu said that Mimiko would remain with the Labour Party, on whose platform he was elected governor.
He said, “Mimiko was elected the governor on the platform of the Labour Party and with Labour Party he intends to remain.
“This is because Governor Olusegun Mimiko believes in the social democratic ideology of the party. And in any case, he does not believe that moving from a party with no leadership division to another party will find comfort with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“We want to seize this opportunity to thank our teaming members and supporters, who have sought clarifications on this matter.”
Nwanyanwu assured members of the party that Mimiko would remain with the Labour Party till the end of his tenure, and after which he said, the governor would also remain as a leader and critical stakeholder to lead the party.
Both Mimiko and the Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, are being rumoured to be perfecting their strategies to move to the ruling party.
While Mimiko is the only governor produced by his party, Obi also remains the only governor to be elected on the platform of the All Progressive Grand Alliance.
But both governors are considered to be political allies  of both the PDP and President Goodluck Jonathan.
